Denver will compete against six other U.S. cities for a $50 million grant to fund tech-driven, regional transportation initiatives.

The Beyond Traffic: Smart City Challenge is sponsored in part by the U.S. Department of Transportation in conjunction with the philanthropic arm of Paul Allen-owned, Seattle-based business conglomerate Vulcan Inc., which is chipping in $10 million of the $50 million. Its goal is to identify the city best enabled to implement a vision for a transportation network that might incorporate or encourage the development and adoption of such technologies as self-driving cars, networked vehicles, improved traffic information infrastructure, all of which DOT refers to as “Intelligent Transportation Systems.”
